“Here is a wetland, about a wetland, from a wetland, to the wetland” is a research project led by the group of third year Product Design where students investigated wetlands in Iceland.

In the second half of this century, wetlands in Iceland have undergone major changes due to drainage for cultivation grounds. It has now come to the point that most wetlands have been cleared and there is little left of untouched of them.

However wetlands are habitats for birds, small animals and plants, that base their all existence on them. A variety of processes occur as well in wetlands, such as water exchange, peat formation, sediment accumulation and carbon sequestration. Research shows that wetlands sequester 70% of Iceland’s carbon production and there restauration could therefore serve the environment.

Students created a book containing: a collection of poems, texts and pictures collected during the three month research phase.

The speculation of creating a Wetland Centre to restaure those natural areas around the country is the final project of the students that they exhibited between the 25th and 27th of November 2022 at Slökkvistöðin, Gufunes, Reykjavík .
