Flateyri is a small town in the westfjords that was hit by a devastating avalanche in 1995 in which 20 people tragically lost their lives.
One preventative measure that can be utilized in the occurrence of another landslide would be the use of rescue dogs. For instance, Icelandic Sheep Dogs were brought in on ships in 1995 and helped save a lot of lives, one story tells of Mikki who crawled through broken window and saved the life of a woman who in other circumstances would not be saved. Mikki sustained major injuries for the ordeal but luckily survived and became a symbol of the gallant rescue efforts.
