		<description>
	It is estimated that each Icelander consumes about 50 kg of sugar per year, even though it is clear to most that sugar has negative effects on health. Could this large amount of sugar be used for something else; can sugar be more roles than just a food item? Could sugar be the solution and not the problem?
Icelanders take pleasure in buying furniture according to the latest trends, and old (and not so old) furniture is constantly being replaced by newer and more fashionable items. Consequently, the disposal of furniture has increased tremendously in recent decades and lifespan of products has been shortened. The obvious solution to this problem is to design furniture and products that can be consumed after use!
Why then not give sugar a greater purpose, utilise it for furniture making? The good thing about edible products is that instead of throwing them away when they are no longer fashionable, you can eat them, no waste!This project explores the possibilities of sugar and its by-products in furniture and product manufacturing.&#38;nbsp;

	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Words from the&#38;nbsp;Iceland University of the Arts BA Degree Show 2023, Dynamo:
“A dynamo converts energy and creates forward motion. The exhibition name suggests a sense of flow and movement, as well as the idea of multiple elements coming together to create a unified whole.
A dynamo is also a person who has boundless energy, enthusiasm, determination and ability.
Springing out of adverse conditions, our students display the resilience of a powerful machine that looks to the future. ¡BANG!&#38;nbsp;
Dynamo celebrates the final burst of creativity of our students before they enter the world to become tomorrows innovators. ¡BOOM! “

Ásgerður Ólafsdóttir / Float Glass
Iceland is the only country in Europe that does not recycle any of its glass, yet glass can be recycled again and again. Of all the advantages that glass has, we have chosen to send it to the landfill again and again. The sand used in glass production is a depleting resource and therefore it is questionable to view glass as a disposable material. Sculptural furniture made from offcut glass and discarded pool floats shine a light on the possibilities of materials we have categorised as unusable. Let us use the glass, finally returning it to its original form of sand.

Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir / Harvest
Harvest aims to show the possibilities of growing more fruits, vegetables &#38;amp; beans in Iceland. The project is a re-creation of the Icelandic feast, Þorrablót, where the meat has been replaced with plants. How would seasonal locally grown vegetables, fruits and beans be preserved over winter, in the way that Icelanders used to preserve meat in the old days? This project is a conversation starter about Icelandic food production with dining experience. If we change the food production system to support modern consumption habits – in which old unused sheepfolds are changed to greenhouses, how would that affect our food culture?

Kamilla Michelle Rún Henriau / Al in Al

In a small-scale casting workshop, people are invited to join the process of transforming and reshaping aluminium. By scaling down the industrial process of melting and forming aluminium, participants are invited to get to know the process, rethink their relationship with aluminium and get to know the material in new context. The production of aluminium is one of the most polluting manufacturing processes, but in regular discussions in Iceland, the material itself is often overlooked. This project raises questions about the value of the material and the urgency of understanding and respecting its unique reshaping properties.

Logi Pedro Stefánsson / Love letter to Litla-Kongó

Love Letter to Litla Kongó is a body of work celebrating the intersection between Icelandic and African Diasporic cultures. Despite Iceland's reputation as a homogeneous nation, the fact is that Iceland has a history of Icelanders with African heritage traced to the slave Hans Jónatan, who fled from Denmark in 1802. Hans’ story was never documented during his lifetime, and his legacy reduced to folklore. Djúpivogur, his village, was later mockingly referred to as "Little Congo". Presented is a collection of objects from contemporary Nordic societies, imagined through the diasporic lens. A re-evaluation of Nordic history and heritage, while celebrating the diverse communities in Iceland.

Valgerður Birna Jónsdóttir / The Golden Fleece

Fé, is an old Icelandic word that can be translated into both sheep and money, denoting the wealth of the large sheep farm of earlier times. Today however, farmers struggle to financially survive from what their sheep produce.
Icelandic sheep farming has increasingly narrowed its focus on lamb-meat production while the value of the wool has been forgotten. The current research demonstrates that valorising the wool may make it more profitable than the lamb-meat. In her quest for The Golden Fleece the designer allows the raw material to guide the creative process. The results are unique patterns highlighting the magnificent range of colors found in the wool of Icelandic sheep.

		<description>
	Football production is larger than one might think, around 40.000.000 footballs are produced every year only by FIFA (the Fédération Internationale de Football Association). Toxic chemicals are used during the production and almost every football is produced in Asia to then be transported and sold to the Americas or Europe.

When a football is sold it has a lifespan of 1-2 years until it is either thrown away, auctioned (if it is a valuable football) or forgotten in your family's garage. The materials in the footballs are very valuable and most of the time the discarded footballs are still functional.

Through his project Supreme Super, Elvar Þorri Örvarsson is showing the possibilities in recycling footballs to make football boots, highlighting the value of their materials and revealing the story behind them.

If it is possible to make functional football boots with discarded footballs it is then possible to make almost any kind of textile products.

		<description>

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Emergent technologies, under- ground subcultures and rising trends contain the potential to alternate our current ways of living and set a direction for the future. However, it is hard to understand what is at stake in such early stages of a discovery or birth of a new belief system. Many urgent questions arise in a fast changing world.&#38;nbsp;

 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Energy is a word we relate to electricity that we use to power heat and light. Electrical energy is obtained from mechanical energy, from rivers running turbines, it is a fi- nite resource and should be taken with care. What if energy could be used to connect us even more to our earth, connect us to non-humans or to the dead ones?

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Through research and collaboration with professionals from the scientific fields, students extrapolate; imagine how a future technology/belief system could be applied following this or this trend. Students analyzed energy in Iceland through the lens of political ecology. They worked on varied and exciting themes regarding energy such as innovative building materials, invisible energy, animals, nature and climate anxiety; from which they created speculative projects for the future or alternative present. Through them, they ask: What future do we want?&#38;nbsp;

		<description>
	“Here is a wetland, about a wetland, from a wetland, to the wetland” is a research project led by the group of third year Product Design where students investigated wetlands in Iceland.

In the second half of this century, wetlands in Iceland have undergone major changes due to drainage for cultivation grounds. It has now come to the point that most wetlands have been cleared and there is little left of untouched of them.

However wetlands are habitats for birds, small animals and plants, that base their all existence on them. A variety of processes occur as well in wetlands, such as water exchange, peat formation, sediment accumulation and carbon sequestration.&#38;nbsp;Research shows that wetlands sequester 70% of Iceland’s carbon production and there restauration could therefore serve the environment.
Students created a book containing: a collection of poems, texts and pictures collected during the three month research phase.The speculation of creating a Wetland Centre to restaure those natural areas around the country is the final project of the students that they exhibited&#38;nbsp;between the 25th and 27th of November 2022 at Slökkvistöðin, Gufunes, Reykjavík .

	An investigation into one of Iceland’s newly gained raw materials, the willow tree. For centuries wood has not been an accessible resource in Iceland. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
By deconstructing the tree into micro scale and reassembling the found elements, the students rendered new materials that could stand by themselves. Setting themselves a frame of adding nothing but water and heat, they further used all byproducts as valuable resources. Inspired by the circulation of natural matter, the transformed materials are able to go back to the forest as nutrition.

		<description>

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The course explores the relations between the human body and technologies in the (alternative) past, present and future, with special emphasis on engaging with audience through platforms of speculation (Dunne &#38;amp; Raby, 2013) and discussion (Tharp &#38;amp; Tharp, 2018) through the making of artifacts and narratives.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The course combines studio research and academic discussion in relation to natural sciences, and students receive training in employing scientific theories in connection with their own design and research work.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

		<description>

In this course students created a speculative design scenario
related to micro-organisms such as: genes, bacteria, microbes and mycelium. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
The
students explored the possibilities and limits of collaborating with
micro-organisms using speculative design method, which was discussed within the
context of contemporary design. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
The scenarios are based on an understanding of
current scientific research and propose a possible way to use (or be used by)
micro-organisms to change human culture, for example in the area of food
production/consumption, health, industry and ecology.

		<title>Soil Erosion in Iceland</title>

		<description>
	Soil erosion in Iceland that is caused by humans is a concerning problem and has been for many centuries.

Iceland is one of the biggest deserts in Europe and our lack of acknowledgement of that gets truly recognized in the way we glorify our malnourished landscape.

The soil plays a big role in the cycle of the ecosystem,&#38;nbsp;but it is disappearing. Soil erosion destroys and washes away the healthy soil and leaves only the&#38;nbsp;malnourished&#38;nbsp;lifeless land behind.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; This installation points out the faults in Iceland's attempt to restore its ecosystem.&#38;nbsp;I wanted to highlight Iceland's fragile and dying soil to the utmost clearest picture and show how we praise and&#38;nbsp;romanticize&#38;nbsp;the characteristics of a land that is vanishing since the Icelandic highlands is our own Sahara.

		<description>
	The world is full of designs centered around misuse and abuse. We’ve all seen some form of a fancy anti-theft bike lock. Sometimes referred to as abuser centered designs. I wanted to research design that could eradicate or diminish abusers. Design that prevents the thought process of stealing a bike. Design that enables desistance. In criminology, desistance is generally defined as the cessation of offending or other antisocial behavior. Pompompom is a set of machines to process hallucinogenic mushrooms for therapeutic use. Consisting of a dryer, grinder and a capsule filler.&#38;nbsp; Made to specifically process Psilocybin Semilanceata, known as Trjónupeðla&#38;nbsp;(Liberty Cap) in Iceland. The mushrooms grow wild and are available for foraging only during a short 2-3&#38;nbsp;weeks&#38;nbsp;period in the arctic climate of Iceland.
